If you are new to homeopathy, it can be confusing learning when and how to take remedies. Because everyone’s body reacts to illness and remedies differently, exact rules are not always helpful. For each condition, we summarize recommendations from experts in the field and also provide general guidelines, as reflected in the Dosage Chart. We concentrate on the 6-30C or X potencies for this website because they are best for people just starting out. The 200C potency is best reserved for emergencies and experienced people who know their remedies, how they work, and are comfortable in dealing with aggravations, if one should occur.
The important points are:
- After the first dose of medicine, wait and watch closely to observe any changes.
- Dangerous/painful cases: wait from 5-30 minutes.
- You can take the remedy while enroute to the emergency room
- Serious cases: wait 1-2 hours.
- You can take the remedy while enroute to the doctor or urgent care.
- Less serious cases: wait 4-8 hours.
- Chronic: wait 1-2 days.
- Dangerous/painful cases: wait from 5-30 minutes.
- Stop taking the remedy when you are about 75-80% improved and let your body finish healing on its own.
- Repeat the remedy if you regress.
- If no improvement after a few doses, this is not the correct remedy. Reassess your symptoms and look for a better matching one.
- If the original symptoms disappear but new symptoms arise, take a new remedy that addresses the new symptoms. For example, the remedy helped your sore throat, but now your nose is running – take a remedy to address the runny nose.
- If symptoms worsen immediately after giving the dose, wait, these are temporary and improvement will follow. If the aggravation is strong and intolerable or lasts for longer than a few hours, see the Antidoting Section or call your homeopath for guidance.
